Services for Children's Hospitals:

Office Practice Redesign

E-prescribing, e-health, telemedicine, expanded hours, Advanced Access, patient-centered medical home, EMR implementation, home monitoring, pay-for-performance…Today's office practice is not your father's medical practice (or shouldn't be designed that way). But too often the pressures of evolving patient and payer expectations are simply layered on the chassis of the 1950's structure of medical office practice. The result: dissatisfied patients, physicians, and staff. Our experienced team of practice consultants, all with hands-on practice management experience, has led medical groups of many specialties and settings through the redesigns of the operation of their practices, resulting in improved patient access, more efficient office operations, and improved satisfaction of all stakeholders. Specific services include:

Advanced Access Implementation

Patient access has become one of the most aggravating issues for patients, physicians, medical group employees, and managers. We have helped medical groups achieve a new level of performance by helping them to fully understand patient demand compared to practice capacity. The result of our collaborative effort is to achieve same day appointment availability, even for the busiest physician. The result is a dramatic improvement in practice operations and financial performance.

The Camden Group's approach is called because we believe that access and patient flow processes must be simplified to achieve patient, physician, and employee satisfaction. Key services and components offered as part of this initiative include:
  • Educate and motivate physician leaders and staff to adopt the Advanced Access philosophy for their organization/practice. Our training workshops are tailored to the group's needs, from two-hour to full-day sessions. We provide each participant with all the tools and information to implement EZ Access successfully, including templates to calculate and forecast patient demand for appointments.
  • On-site assessment and hands-on implementation support. We provide experienced office practice consultants who work side-by-side with physicians and managers to facilitate the implementation of the EZ Access principles. This may include work-flow assessment and improvement, management coaching, and/or physician communication.
  • Physician compensation and related strategies. The successful implementation of EZ Access may require adapting the medical group's incentive structures, performance measures, and compensation formulas for physicians and management. We can assist in developing these and other structural changes to assure that improved access is "embedded" in the group's culture.
  • Systems and methods to assure long-lasting results. We can assist in designing and maintaining data collection and reporting tools to assure consistent monitoring of the metrics critical to maintaining optimal access.

Care Model Redesign

What is your medical group's vision of the "ideal" patient experience? How does this jive with physicians' desires for their own work/life balance? How will a new EMR be incorporated into your practice? Can the principles of a "patient-centered medical home" fit into your current practice design and function? How can we do this and still maintain a financially viable practice?

We work with medical practices in single-specialty, multi-specialty, and hospital-based settings to redesign the structure, patient interface, staff-physician relationships, facility design, and payer strategies in light of these and other questions. Our approach includes the following:
  • Conducting educational sessions for medical group board, senior management, physicians, and support staff regarding emerging modalities for care delivery and their impact on today's medical practices
  • Facilitating sessions with senior leadership to articulate the medical group's vision of the future and desired attributes of their practice
  • Evaluating the applicability of new care modalities such as care teams, medical home, group visits, e-visits, and home monitoring
  • Preparing a financial impact analysis, given changes in staffing, technology utilization, payer relationships, facility needs, and scope of service. This may also include projections for the impact of doing nothing.
  • Designing a detailed implementation plan, including required training, recruiting, and other resource needs
  • Leading or facilitating implementation of the new delivery model
Our consultants understand the dynamics of change management and have successfully implemented change and innovative care delivery models that "stick" in many medical group environments, including private practice, hospital-based practices, and academic practices.
