James R. Smith

Mr. Smith is a seasoned HMO/PPO, insurance company, healthcare system, and physician group executive with extensive experience in managed care development and operations, strategic and business planning, medical group operations, and direct contracting.  He is a leading expert in developing accountable care organizations (“ACOs”) and assisting organizations to achieve clinical integration.  As a healthcare and health plan leader, he has developed and led physician groups (including IPAs, MSOs), HMOs/PPOs, hospitals, health systems, and other health plans.

Prior to joining The Camden Group, Mr. Smith was the Regional President of Excellus/Blue Cross for the Central New York Region.  Mr. Smith also served as president and chief executive officer at Greater Rochester Independent Practice Association (“GRIPA”).  He developed many of the programs and initiatives that enabled the organization to successfully seek and receive the well-known Federal Trade Commission private letter ruling regarding clinical integration.  He developed governance as well as operating structures to manage an integrated healthcare network formed by three physician organizations and four hospitals. 

 

Mr. Smith is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and of the Mandel Center for the Study of Nonprofits.

Mr. Smith completed his master’s in business administration at Case Western Reserve University and is a doctorial candidate at the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University.
