Hospital-Based Physician Services

The type of physicians practicing full-time in the hospital setting has expanded from the traditional department-based specialties such as radiology, anesthesiology, pathology, and emergency medicine to include specialties not confined to a particular department. Increasingly, physicians are applying their specialty knowledge full-time in a hospital, serving as hospitalists, surgicalists, neuro-hospitalists, intensivists, obstetrical-hospitalists (laborists), or in other capacities. The Camden Group is prepared to assist you with assessing and identifying appropriate strategies to achieve your organization's inpatient clinical and business objectives. The scope of our services includes new program design through the assessment and improvement of existing practices and hospital-physician relationships.

New Program Design

The Camden Group has over a decade of experience with hospitalist, intensivist, and other hospital-based physician services. The analysis and advice from our interdisciplinary team of clinicians, nurses, and financial analysts help to ensure the effective implementation of properly structured and sized programs. Focus areas of our analysis and involvement include:
  • Establishing objectives and service expectations
  • Assessing need, size/staffing, and financial feasibility
  • Achieving clinical integration and medical staff acceptance
  • Defining organizational structure and operational processes
  • Compensation design and fairness opinions
  • Benchmarking and reporting
  • Implementation and training

Program Assessment

Over time, needs evolve and the original intent and structure of programs may no longer be consistent with the current situation. The Camden Group is adept at identifying true needs and advising organizations on how to re-structure services to meet the needs of the hospital, medical staff, patient, and the attending physician. Typical program assessment engagements include a review of:
  • Program staffing, scheduling, and workload balancing
  • Financial cost and program benefits
  • Operational processes
  • Management and leadership
  • Clinical interactions among team members and with the medical staff
  • Physician compensation and incentive arrangements
  • Coding and physician documentation
  • Service standards, including communications with medical and hospital staff
